3.1.2 Ten Golden Rules

Keep in Touch

Visit young people at least every 6 weeks unless agreed otherwise.

Phone us at other times to keep us aware of important developments.

Quality Time

The visit has to be a quality visit.

Do not count a review as a visit.

Our Time

The visits must be a minimum of one hour.

Unless agreed with us. Agreement to be recorded.

Respect

Treat young people with respect always return our calls or let us know when you are available.

Give Me a Choice When you plan to visit always give us 4 hours notice as we have a life as well. We do understand if it is a Child Protection visit.
On Time We would like our review decisions sent to us within within14 days-if this is not possible then as soon as possible afterwards; but no more than a month.
Our Story All young people should know about the Access to Records Policy.
Listen Up Children and young people’s views are important and should be taken seriously and mean something.
On Our Minds Consultation papers to be sent out 7 days before the review and not given to us on the same day. We have the choice to write, draw, or speak our views or to come up with other creative ways to show what’s on our minds.
Money Matters Children and Young people should know the amount of pocket money we get; as we tend to talk to each other.
Save for Our Future We should have saving accounts and if not given all our pocket money it should go into our accounts.
Document for Life

Social workers at all times should check to see if a child/ young person as a Passport and Birth Certificate.

They should clarify the child’s or young person status. If this has not been achieved the reason should be recorded on file.

Final Respect Social workers should always turn up on time for meetings and visits.

Although they are called the Ten Golden Rules developed in 2005 there are in fact 13. As young people we are allowed to be inconsistent. Young people will look these rules at yearly. The Ten Golden Rules should be read alongside the Southwark Pledge (2010).
